Home Remedies to Avoid the Doc

Home Remedies to Avoid the Doc

No one likes going to the doctor, myself included. Trips have a tendency to cause a substantial hit on your wallet, no matter your health insurance. To combat making too many trips to the doc, wasting all your disposable income, here are some home remedies to space those adventures out for you.

We’ve all heard the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but how true is it? Apparently the origin comes from a Pembrokeshire proverb: Eat an apple on going to bed, And you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread. Apples contain Vitamin C, which aid the immune system and also reduce tooth decay.

Bananas are high in potassium, which is one nutrient not everyone gets enough of. Going for a run or working out? Then have a banana before you do; they are good for your muscles (and hopefully you won’t cramp up).

I remember my grandmother telling me eating a few prunes a day will keep you regular, but I was never a big fan of prunes. But if you are in a tight spot financially, a box of prunes is much less than other laxatives and will do the trick. Raisins on the other hand I love and are a great, healthy snack. They too can cure constipation, as well as having other benefits: they keep the blood clean and flowing, good for your eyes, and a good source of energy.

Everyone loves the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae, but I bet you didn’t know that eating a few cherries will relieve your headache. According to Choosecherries.com, the fruit can help ease the pain of arthritis and gout and can reduce the risk factors for heart disease and certain cancers. How about if you travel a lot and experience jet lag — cherries can help you out there too. They can also delay the aging process (I mean no one wants to get old), so they could even save you a trip to the plastic surgeon, which is not a cheap visit.

So instead of snacking on some cookies or getting something from the vending machine at work, just grab an apple, banana or raisins to fight the hunger and maybe make that visit to the doctor unnecessary.
